Healthy Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Doctor Pizza

Irish soda bread is a traditional favorite known for its hearty texture and delicious flavor. However, classic recipes often contain refined flour and sugar. This healthier version uses whole-grain flour, natural sweeteners, and nutritious add-ins to make it more wholesome while preserving its signature taste and texture.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk (or dairy-free alternative: almond milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or almonds, optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast-iron skillet.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, honey (or maple syrup), and melted butter (or coconut oil).

Step 4: Form the Dough

  1. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Gently fold in the raisins and nuts if using.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about a minute, just until it comes together.

Step 5: Shape and Bake

  1. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet or skillet.
  2. Using a sharp knife, score a deep “X” across the top.
  3. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 6: Cool and Serve

  1. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
  2. Serve warm with a spread of butter, honey, or your favorite healthy topping.
